The 1960s: The Growth Years
Intereconomics begins publication
The Hamburg Institute for International Economics (HWWA) had been publishing an English-language version of the journal Wirtschaftsdienst since 1950. Beginning in 1963, the publication underwent several changes before emerging as the new journal Intereconomics – Monthly Review of International Trade and Development in 1966.
Some of the topics covered in the 1960s are still frequently discussed by policy makers today, including the large U.S. trade deficit, how to optimise development aid, and the UK’s role within an integrated Europe. On the other hand, articles dealing with the embargo against the USSR, the failings of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro’s economic plan for Cuba, and debating whether the European Economic Community should adopt a common currency have been overtaken by history.
